First of all Hydrocodone is contained within Vicodin, so no one would prescribe both plain hydrocodone and Vicodin (hydrocodone and tylenol) in tandem, as you would just be giving double the dose of the opiate with some tylenol, it would make no sense. You would either prescribe straight hydrocone and have the patient take whatever amount of tylenol in tandem with it as warranted, or you could prescribe straight hydrocodone with no amplifier, or you would just go ahead and prescribe the specific hydrocodone and tylenol combo drug that is warranted to control their pain.
It seems like this question is worded incorrectly and should be worded as such, “Why would a clinician choose to prescribe Vicodin which is a combination drug (opiate and acetaminophen) over the straight hydrocodone with no amplifier?
Ans the answer to that question would be # 3, because the tylenol contained within the name brand drug, Vicodin, helps the clinician to be able to prescribe a lower dose of the addictive component, hydrocodone, due to the amplification effects that tylenol has on an opioid agonist.
Thanks Deep T…glad to know we are on the same page!
