What Treatment is Available For Stage IV Cancer?
Laura Guthrie asked:
Being diagnosed with cancer is frightening enough but what happens when that cancer progresses to Stage IV, the most serious stage of cancer? Is there still hope? The short answer is that, yes, there is still hope and still many options to consider. ‘Staging’ refers to rating the severity of cancer and is based primarily on what we know about the ways and rates at which different cancers progress. When giving a diagnosis of ‘stage __ cancer’, the doctors will take into consideration where and how large tumors are, how much/if any the cancer has spread and the types of tumor(s), among other factors.
Stage 0 is also called carcinoma in situ, meaning that the cancer has not spread beyond the layer of cells in which it originated. Obviously, a cancer caught in Stage 0 holds an excellent prognosis for remission with proper treatment. In contrast, cancers that are classified as being in stages 1, 2, or 3 will be more extensive and potentially require more invasive or longer periods of treatment. Stage 4 cancer is one that has spread to other organs or organ systems and require very aggressive and immediate action. Treatment of Stage 4 cancers are essentially the same as for the other stages, but medications may be given in larger doses or surgical intervention may be more extensive.
The primary treatments for cancer include radiation and chemotherapy, surgery and experimental medications. Radiation treatment and chemotherapy both work in similar ways, in that they use different substances or physical means of destroying cancer cells. These treatments may also be used to help slow or stop the spread of cancer cells to other areas of the body. Radiation may be administered through the use of X-rays, implants or even injected into the body. Chemotherapy also introduces substances that are toxic to cancer cells into the body. Both of these treatments can be very effective, but carry with them potentially uncomfortable and serious side effects.
Side effects for radiation or chemotherapy can include anemia, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite and extreme fatigue. Some patients also experience hair loss, as a result of the destruction of healthy body cells. These treatments can also leave the body’s immune system somewhat depressed making patients more susceptible to infections. Other treatments for Stage IV cancer can include surgical interventions, which attempt to remove cancerous tissue while leaving as much of the surrounding healthy tissue intact as possible. A number of patients, particularly those who are told that their cancer is terminal or incurable, have begun turning to alternative and natural therapies as either their primary means of treatment, or an adjunct to medical means.
A wide variety of natural or herbal remedies and treatment methodologies are available, some at centers that specialize in alternative options for cancer patients. Most natural practitioners agree that lifestyle changes, combined with therapies that cleanse the body of toxins, can be very effective in reducing the incidence of unpleasant treatment side effects and possibly slowing the progress of cancer.
