Pain Free Naturally

Denise Elle asked:

Have you ever gone on a nice, easy run and felt a slight twinge here, and another there? But, still, you keep on running, ignoring the twinge. Two days later, out you go, again for yet another comfortable, easy run. That twinge is still with you, but it’s not so bad to prevent you continuing your run.

Now, the weekend arrives. Nirvana. All the time in the world for your much anticipated weekly, long run. After a few short clicks, you trip and fall, hitting your knee, the twinge, has now become a distinct pain. So intense is the pain, climbing up the stairs to your walk-up apartment, after your run, is near impossible. Nevertheless, you forge on, through sheer determination and true grit, visions of the every runner’s remedy — the icepack — leads you, step, by painful, step to the fridge’s freezer.

Despite days of self-medicating – icing the knee – the ever present swelling and pain drives you to the doctor. The diagnosis, “…a bruised knee cap and no running for 10 to 12 weeks.” Yikes! The doctor’s prescription: an anti-inflammatory.

Now, respectful of my pain threshold, anti-inflammatory drugs are not high on my list of must haves. Research shows that anti-inflammatory drugs interfere with the body’s natural healing process and can prolong and prevent healing. Not an option for me. The option of managing pain, naturally, has a large pull.

For the most part, managing pain, naturally, is a case of trial and patience. A liquid format is most efficient and ensures the body rapidly absorbs all the ingredients, for a faster and more effective relief.

As an example, and admittedly this is not for everyone, someone who weighs 124 lbs and stands tall at 5″ 1′, the combination of natural herbs and minerals daily include:

Glucosamine (1,500 mg) rebuilds cartilage and is commonly used for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

MSM or Methylsulfonylmethane (1,000 mg) acts as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory.

Collagen (5,000 mg) nourishes the cartilage, bones, connective tissues and skin.

Turmeric (150 mg) helps in the production of naturally produced anti-inflammatory substances in the body.

Ginger (510 mg) helps reduce pain, and may have blood thinning and cholesterol lowering properties helpful in treating heart disease.

Bromelain (150 mg) is an anti-inflammatory agent excellent for sports injuries, trauma, arthritis and other kinds of swelling.

Devil’s Claw (150 mg) has strong inflammatory properties that help to reduce pain.

Boswellia (150 mg) is an anti-inflammatory that helps improve mobility and pain.

Pomegranate Juice (8 oz.) is an anti-oxidant that lowers the levels of inflammation and reduces enzymes that erode cartilage.

Vitamin D (1,000 I.U.) increases bone growth and strength.

Calcium (1,000 mg) is the main component of bone and necessary for joint repair.

This self-remedy taken for that period of time was very effective in getting me back running in less than five weeks after my injury, while at the same time provided nourishment to rebuild and maintain healthy joints and cartilage – crucial to every runner.

Hemorrhoid Pain Relief Myths – Don’t Believe and Follow These Myths

Lance Esondi asked:

When you are suffering from the pain of hemorrhoids, you may go to extremes to alleviate the pain. There are some tips out there that aren’t helpful at all. In fact they can cause hemorrhoids to take longer to heal if followed.

Myth: Avoiding going to the bathroom will not hurt hemorrhoids.

This seems to make sense on the surface. If you don’t have bowel movements, then the hemorrhoids aren’t disturbed. The fact is that obstructing the bowel movement by holding it in over and over can cause it to back up and even constipation. The end result is more damage and pain to the hemorrhoid than not.

Myth: Sitting on toilet is a good place to relieve hemorrhoid pain.

The reality is that there is much strain and stress on hemorrhoids when sitting on the toilet. Much of your body weight is focused on that one area. This may be spread around due to the fact that the toilet seat looks like hemorrhoid cushions. It’s better to use the cushion or donut than the toilet seat for a place to comfortably sit.

Myth: Natural herbs aren’t as good for pain relief as commercial creams and ointments.

There are mixed opinions on this. The commercial creams and ointments are quite effective at relieving pain but most can’t be used more than a week. Natural herbs such as witch hazel can be used over and over. This herb actually comes on wipes specifically made for hemorrhoid pain and is quite effective. If one relies on commercial creams, it’s only a temporary pain solution and not a long term one.

Can you suggest anything to alleviate this headache?

Chaos Theory asked:

I’ve tried eating, Tylenol, Advil, Sudafed, and Ultram at different points throughout the day, all to no avail. I even had a coworker pull my hair up into a super-tight ponytail (which sometimes works, for some strange reason)–that worked for about 20 minutes, but now it’s just as bad as it ever was. I’m in some serious pain here. (Please don’t suggest narcotics because I don’t have any and don’t intend to get any.)
