Igor Stiler asked:

Most of us who have had to see a loved one or friend spend many an agonizing hour in the hospital would agree that no patient deserves to suffer from pain, especially from chronic pain. Whether chronic or acute, pain is something which distresses those afflicted by it, often interfering in their daily activities and ruining their sleep. Pain management programs incorporate several modalities used in tandem with one another and ranging from massages to the surgical insertion of electrotherapy devices.

Pain management programs are used in the treatment of a multiplicity of pain types including:

o	Back pain
o	Neck pain
o	Myofacial pain
o	Cancer pain
o	Neuropathic pain
o	Headaches
o	Pain that follows a surgery
o	Pediatric pain

Pain management programs are directed at enhancing the physical, social and psychological functioning of the individual. A patient should be wise in selecting the right program from the right pain management clinic to get maximum benefit. The first step in selecting a suitable program is finding a suitable clinic in close proximity to your home and which has a separate, specialized pain management section. The section should include such medical professionals as neurologists, psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, physical therapists, and nurses; and these professionals should be well-versed in the pain management techniques. The program should also offer features such as counseling for both the patient and his family, facilities for exercise training, and follow-up services.

The techniques used in pain management programs can be non-invasive or invasive. Common among the non-invasive methods of managing pain are manual methods (like osteopathy and chiropractics), exercise, use of narcotic medications and analgesics, electrotherapy and cognitive therapy. Invasive methods include radiofrequency radio ablations, prolotherapy, and medications.

Pain management programs offered by competent pain management clinics focus on personalized care. Once the program has started, the progress made by the patient is reviewed at intervals and changes are made if necessary, to the program of care. The reality is that a particular pain management program may sometimes initially not work for a patient. Though results can’t be expected overnight, once the patient has found himself the right approach, the road to recovery wouldn’t be too far off.

Buy Fioricet, Tramadol, Carisoprodol

Sara Daniels asked:

I had never given a thought to ovarian cancer, and why would I? When it comes to gynecological cancers you hear about breast cancer all the time but you never hear much at all about ovarian cancer. I probably heard the words before at some point but until I was diagnosed with stage 2 ovarian cancer I was pretty ignorant of signs and symptoms and had no idea what to look for.

As it turned out, I had probably been having early warning signs for some time, possibly years, but I attributed them all as just regular old signs of getting a little older and entering that time in life where different things start to bother you or basically fall apart, kind of like a car that is reaching the end of your warranty. You know how that goes, your warranty runs out and you’re in the repair shop every other week.

So I had been having typical symptoms such as indigestion (never had that before), bloating, change in menstrual periods (heavier), and some pelvic pain right AFTER my periods. It was really a strange symptom I thought because it wasn’t right along with that time of the month but a few days after. But then it would go away and I would just figure, you know, getting older, etc.

But then I started having this annoying leg pain. It was sort of a radiating pain, so I figured it must be something to do with a nerve. Sciatica? I didn’t think so because it didn’t follow the usual M.O. for that type of nerve pain. Maybe a muscle strain? Fibroids? Yes, that was it, I decided, fibroids. I researched all the symptoms and everything added up! A huge fibroid must be pressing on my sciatic nerve and causing this intolerably aggravating leg pain. I made an appointment with my gynecologist and she agreed, yes, that must be it.

She sent me for an ultrasound where a large mass was seen, so I was immediately sent to a gynecologic oncologist. This is the best person for ANY type of GYN problems that are out of the norm because these doctors are very specialized, but it is very scary to be sitting in the oncologist’s office wondering if you may have cancer. As soon as I had my exam, my doctor scheduled surgery, and soon! My surgery was done 6 days later and the diagnoses was stage 2 ovarian cancer. I was then scheduled to begin chemotherapy. I did not want to hear this! All I could think of was losing my hair. In the grand scheme of things this is such a small thing, but believe me, when you are faced this it just seems so awful and dreadful.

But there was good news hidden inside all of the bad, and that was that I ONLY had stage 2 ovarian cancer and not a later stage which is most often diagnosed (due to the fact that no one realizes they are having any symptoms to be worried about).

I am happy to say I made it through it all and am now cancer free. I do believe though that if I had not had the leg pain I would NOT have gone to the doctor anytime soon, probably not for quite some time, as my symptoms were just so nonspecific and seemingly very benign, and my disease may have gone unnoticed and kept growing. So please do heed your body’s communication with you and if you have anything going on that seems really out of the ordinary, have it checked out by a doctor.

buy Fioricet, Tramadol, Ultracet, Carisoprodol

Lillian Brummet asked:

Genocide – How Your Doctor’s Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You, by James E. Carlson was just recently released in 2007 as a thick paperback alternative health guide. James, a practicing physician, explains how simple dietary changes can not only reduce the chance of getting many of today’s prevalent ailments, but also to heal patients who are already plagued by a variety of illnesses. His choice of wording in the title reflects that the entire population is dying from entirely preventable ailments because of dietary misconceptions.

James begins his book by showing how his own health problems led him to try dietary changes, which he passed along to his patients and saw some amazing results. There are 2 parts to this book. Part One details the concept of the diet, while Part 2 names specific diseases and ailments that the author has personally witnessed very positive results when his suggestions were used.

I felt the book was full of information, but lacking in organization as far as including a table of contents, bibliography and author bio page – none of which were included in this book. That said – the book’s back cover did use the standard space allotted for author information. This area is impressive – he author has degrees in biochemistry, cellular physiology and medicine. On top of this he has held many positions in the medical field and currently operates a private medical practice in New York (USA). I did enjoy the occasional quote that the author chose to include in the book – I felt they were powerful. The size and spacing of the font was very easy to read. However I was disappointed to find no information on the eco-printing options available for book publishing and distribution processes today, i.e. recycling content, vegetable inks, carbon offsetting, etc. I found that I became slightly concerned about the quality of the book, because after only one reading the cover wouldn’t lie flat even after bending it the other way.

Otherwise, I think that Genocide – How Your Doctor’s Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You is worth the retail price. The information within the 304 pages may just save your life.

ISBN#: 978-1-4196-8582-8

Rating: 3.5-out-of-5 stars

Butalbital APAP Caffeien

Christian Cameron asked:

Excessive sweating is a condition that many people have to cope with daily. This can cause a person to feel frustrated and embarrassed to the extent that some people avoid social contact due to their sweating. How to Stop Excessive Sweating in Fourteen Days is an e-book claiming to use scientific proven ways to permanently stop sweating leaving a person to look better, feel better and have more confidence. The methods described in the book does not involve using any products like powders, pills, creams or even hypnosis for that matter but relies on natural forms of remedies developed over years of trial and error.

How To Stop Excessive Sweating uses a few simple things that work together to reduce sweating to almost nothing. Some people claim they have seen results almost immediately whilst with others it took a couple of days before the sweating reduced. In other words the system does not claim instant results however it can differ from person to person. The book claims to teach the root that causes excessive sweating and provides solutions that won’t cost money or any effort. The book claims these natural techniques are not commonly known to people therefore it makes the system quite unique.

The author of How to Stop Excessive Sweating has lived with this condition for many years and having tried things like lotions, powders, pills and various antiperspirants found that none of these cured his sweating. Like so many other sufferers he has even tried wearing different forms and colors of clothing. Having done extensive research and trying different combinations of remedies and writing down his findings led him into discovering a solution that claims to solve sweating problems for good. The book deals with amongst others issues like what causes sweating, how different foods can make a difference in the amount of sweat a person creates and why sweating occurs at each part of the body. The foundation of the system is called “stacking” which means its four things a person can stack together to guarantee dryness. The book includes two bonuses.

How To Stop Excessive Sweating In 14 Days can be considered by any person willing to try new and natural techniques to solve their sweating condition.

(c) Reviewed Best 2009

Buy Tramadol Site

Dr. Donna Schwontkowski asked:

Karen had an advanced case of breast cancer when her friend asked her to see me. Doctors had given up hope on her and wouldn’t operate and told her it was too late to treat her. She was looking for some sort of alternative health solution for the pain she was in, not the cancer, since she knew her time was limited.

At the time, I knew of nothing that could be used for the pain. In alternative health practice, the answer to reducing pain is to eliminate the cause of the pain, and in Karen’s case, this solution looked pretty grim. Certainly one could try supportive measures such as increase CoQ10 and germanium levels that would oxygenate the tissues and possibly activate some healing, or try using acupuncture to open all the right energy channels for healing energy to flow through. But as far as an actual pain relief formula for cancer goes, that drew a big blank.

I find that by posing questions during the day in my mind, answers always seem to pop up and sometimes they do within a few days. Sometimes the answer comes in a matter of minutes.

How can cancer patients get pain relief? Certainly there must be an answer out there. Enough people have gone through the ravages of cancer and someone must have tried something that worked for at least 10 to 25% of those suffering from cancer.

The answer came through an indirect way. A friend had told me about her journey through life the last year, watching four of her good friends die of cancer. It was heart-wrenching to see her friends suffer. She began searching for pain relief solutions for cancer patients. After a few months, she found one.

I learned that pain from cancer ruins the quality of life they have, and does it rapidly. One-third to almost a half of all cancer patients experience moderate to severe pain during their bout of cancer. In those with advanced cases of cancer, that percentage jumps to between 70 and 90%. The sad news is that cancer survivors can continue to suffer from the pain years later. What an unfair situation that is, to have recovered from cancer and then be left with the pain and no solution for pain relief anywhere!

My friend found an herbal combination that was specifically designed by Chinese herbalists to control the cancer pain. It was actually designed as a pain relief solution for cancer victims. She had recommended it to some people who used the herbal pain relief formula and it had worked quite well, she said.

Some of the herbs included in the formula are Notoginseng, Red Sage, Red Peony, Cnidium and other analgesic herbs. As a master herbalist, I knew there were herbs that could interact with the nervous system and some that had the capability to decrease substance P, the substance responsible for pain sensations, but had never been taught what herbs to mix together to accomplish the degree of pain relief that cancer patients needed. It makes total sense physiologically and herbally that an all natural herbal formula could make a difference in pain management.

The good news was that the Chinese had already created the pain relief formula for cancer pain. As an herbalist, if you come across a formula that works, the rule is leave it alone! Use it.

I was sad that Karen, the woman with advanced breast cancer, moved away and was unreachable for me to share the good news. But the thought of helping others find a solution for pain relief for cancer was important enough to write this article.

Butalbital APAP Caffeine, Fioricet, Tramadol

Conie Gutang asked:

Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment in which energy is being utilized to kill cancer cells as well as shrink tumor. In cancer radiation therapy damages not only the cancer cells but also the normal cells however, normal cells can recover and regain its normal function. Usually, radiation is being done to complete the destruction of all tumor however, some cases uses radiation to only shrink the tumor in order the the symptoms to be relieved. It can be used as a sole treatment for cancer or as a combination together with chemotherapeutic drugs or surgery.

In some types of cancer radiation is not being used as a treatment but as a prophylactic, which means radiation is given to areas even without the evidence of cancer to prevent the development of cancer cells. Sometimes, radiation therapy is given to relieve the pain one is experiencing. In this regard, the radiation is considered to be palliative, not treating the disease, only reducing the symptoms.

There are many consideration when undergoing radiation therapy. For external radiation, patients are not radioactive and the avoidance to people around is not necessary. However, for internal radiation, in which there is the presence of implants, patients need to stay in the hospital. They are considered radioactive and the hospital staff including visitors, family and friends should avoid the patient as much as possible. If contact is necessary, certain precautions must be taken into account.

In certain cancer radiation dose should be followed. Usually, the dose that is given to cancer patients maximizes the destruction f cancer cells and minimizes the damage it will bring to the normal cells. There are different energy source for internal and external radiation.

A team is needed when providing cancer radiation therapy. You need a radiation oncologist is a doctor who specializes in using radiation as a treatment for cancer. The team also includes a dosimetrist who determines the proper radiation dose, radiation physicist who makes sure that the machines being used delivers the appropriate amount of radiation and the radiation therapist who is responsible to deliver the radiation. The team works hand in hand with other doctors involved in the treatment.

A careful planning is necessary when a cancer patient decide to undergo radiation therapy. The team should be present when discussing the radiation therapy to the patient and is responsible to inform the patient of what to expect during the treatment. Depending on the type of radiation treatment, certain marks are necessary. The marks are placed in the body of the patient in which the radiation will be focused.

It is the right of the patient undergoing radiation therapy to be informed of what to expect before, during, or after the treatment. It is also important to inform the patient that radiation therapy is best when combined with other cancer therapy such as the use of chemotherapeutic drugs and or surgery if necessary.

Buy Butalbital Caffeine

At fifteen months he was constantly running in circles around their living room.

Roman’s pediatrician assured Elizabeth, “all is well.” She gave simple explanations for each observation. After more red flags appeared, Elizabeth out of desperation sought another opinion. At seventeen months Roman was diagnosed with Sensory Process Disorder, a condition of the central nervous system, which left Roman with the inability to interpret sensory information correctly. By age two he had exhibited 45 symptoms of autism.

“Raindrops on Roman” is the account of Elizabeth Scott’s dedication and persistence. It is the story of Roman’s response to her consistent love and patient endurance. Elizabeth, an elementary school teacher put her career on hold, to devote herself completely to Roman’s recovery and healing. She has written this account to give a message of hope to others as she relates the steps of Roman’s recovery from autism. Theirs is an amazing journey of courage and fortitude.

I personally appreciated the fact that Elizabeth writes in easy to read understandable layman’s language as she describes in detail the complex goals of tactile and speech therapies. She tells of confronting the challenge of adapting the skills learned from Roman’s therapists into drills, and play times designed to change the negative brain patterns to create positive responses. These exercises resulted in cognitive development processes to enable remembering, reasoning, understanding, and the use of good judgment.

Roman’s behavioral patterns also challenged Elizabeth. He was often obstinate and belligerent. He was frequently confrontational. These sudden outbursts repeatedly caused “mini meltdowns.” The potential of these occasions created a sense of apprehension and embarrassment for Elizabeth in stores, at the park, the library, or in family gatherings.

Through her work with therapists, doctors, and program directors Elizabeth quickly gained knowledge and insights into sensory and autistic behavior. She clearly articulates and communicates this information to the reader. The skills, supplies, lessons, interventions, and new pediatric guidelines referred to in the book are included in a very useful series of appendices.

Elizabeth credits Roman’s restoration and healing to her availability and willingness to devote her full time to working with Roman consistently while she created a plan of drills and skills as therapy. She also attributes the support of her husband, her personal faith, and the prayers of her family and friends as key factors in the healing process.

“Raindrops on Roman” is a remarkable story of a mother’s love and complete dedication to her son. It is a tribute to Roman’s response to her love. I highly recommend this book to any family touched with special needs children and to those who have chosen a career in meeting the challenge of working with these families.

Robert D.
Denice Moffat asked:

Book Review: Outsmarting the Midlife Fat Cell–Winning Weight Control Strategies for Women Over 35 to Stay Fit Through Menopause by Debra Waterhouse, M.P.H., R.D.

We each are born with 30 Billion fat cells.

Fat cells have an important mission of manufacturing estrogen and balancing our body during the transition into menopause–and they will do everything possible to make sure that they don’t let you down. It seems women today have transitions that are more magnified than generations past. We are gaining 50% more weight than our mothers did and the time it takes to travel through perimenopause and menopause is 500 times longer. We have more hot flashes, more memory loss, and more insomnia.

Women’s bodies are different than men’s. A woman’s fat cells are five times larger than a man’s, have twice the amount of fat-storing enzymes and half the fat releasing enzymes. Plus, men have more muscle, and muscle uses up more calories, so men have an advantage over us–unless we are in a famine situation.

Women’s fat cells produce estrogen which helps them maintain fat in certain areas of the body. Gaining up to ten pounds during perimenopause and menopause is normal. More weight gain than that can affect our health negatively.

Estrogen surges during puberty and pregnancy help us to gain weight, but in the menopausal transition phase a decrease in estrogen causes a weight gain by influencing the fat cells to increase fat-storing enzymes. So any extra calories are retained as fat. Women need this extra weight because the fat cells produce estrogen which helps to prevent bone loss after menopause is complete.

Estrogen is also responsible for about 300 other functions having to do with activity in the brain, sleep, decreasing hot flashes, bones, skin, heart and other cells. Stress and malnourishment triggers menopause to come faster. Having babies slows the clock. Each baby gives us five more months to hold off menopause.

Stress wreaks havoc on our bodies by over stimulating our hearts, weakening our immune systems, upsetting the hormonal balance, decreasing estrogen levels, aggravating menstrual dysfunction, and it is responsible for infertility, intense PMS, megamenopause and excess weight gain.

Cravings for sugar, chocolate and fat in the transitional phase helps to increase serotonin in the brain which helps us to feel better about ourselves, gives us more energy and stabilizes mood swings.
After age 45, women lose ? pound of muscle per year and their caloric needs drop by about 400 calories per day. If you eat the same amount of food as before age 45, these extra calories go into fat storage in preparation for menopause.

Positive changes associated with menopause include: increased sex drive, energy, productivity, creativity, greater confidence and self-esteem, enhanced communication skills, and a greater awareness of the body’s needs.

From age 35-55, there is a dip in estrogen. During that time we lose about 65% of our estrogen. That dip in estrogen can cause hair to fall out. This hair loss is also noticeable after birthing and just before you menstruate as well as in the perimenopausal period.

So, how do you outsmart the cells to keep extra weigh off during menopause? Debra stresses a four-point approach including: exercise, modified eating habits, managing stress and taking care of your body.

1. Exercise.

How much? 60 minutes of aerobic exercise four times a week at moderate intensity. It will limit the amount of abdominal weight gained caused by stress and stress eating. A variety of exercise is more effective than the same old stuff you’ve always done, so mix up the type of exercises you do.

Exercise during the transition time will help fight fatigue, increase your body’s metabolism, make your brain perkier, help you sleep better, stabilize your mood, diminish food cravings, reduce hot flashes, increase your flexibility and help with balance, mobility and agility, strengthen your bones, reduce your risk of breast cancer and heart disease, stabilize your blood sugar and help you live longer.

And don’t overdo it. Too much exercise increases your chances of injury, compromises your ability to burn fat, harms your immune system, compromises your sleep patterns, puts wear and tear on your skeletal system and cuts down your lifespan. Balance is the key.

2. Modify Your Eating Habits:

oEat frequently. Eating five or more times a day provides a steady and dependable source of glucose for our brains, balances mood swings and boosts energy.

oSnack often. Don’t skip meals. It slows down the metabolism.

oEat your largest meal at lunch. Eat your smallest meal at dinner. During midlife our metabolism slows WAY down after 6pm and our nighttime caloric needs are almost non-existent.

oEat smaller amounts overall. Eat no more than the size of your fist because that’s how big your unstretched stomach is.

oCheck in with your body. Eat ? of your meal. Ask, “Am I still hungry?” If so, eat another quarter of the meal. Ask the question again. When you are no longer hungry, stop eating. Listen to your body’s needs for food. When you are hungry, you can’t gain weight from eating–unless you overeat. Your body is asking for food and it will use it. Determine your body’s signs of hunger. Where does hunger originate? In your stomach, brain, or in your body manifested as lack of energy?

oBe present when you eat. Pause when you eat and take in the experience. Sit after you eat and make the experience last. Enjoy the foods you crave. Don’t deny yourself of them. Just eat less and enjoy it more.

oFollow your cravings. Food cravings are the only way for your brain to communicate exactly what it needs to function optimally. Eat full-fat foods (just smaller portions). Craving carbohydrates can mean you are low in serotonin (feeling stressed or depressed). Craving fats may mean you are low in endorphins (feeling moody), and craving protein may mean you are low in dopamine (can’t concentrate.)

oEnjoy your alcohol, but limit it to 2-3 drinks/week for optimal health benefits.

oEat more protein, but not too much. Over 60 grams/day leaches minerals from the bones and increases the risk for osteoporosis. High-protein diets are not good for the bones OR the kidneys. Optimal amounts of protein enhance the immune system during transition into menopause.

oWhen taking calcium supplements, take them with food–calcium citrate seems to be the most absorbable calcium according to Debra. (Dr. Moffat’s note: I’ve found that taking your calcium with some fat helps the calcium absorb better.)

oEat a wide variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables.

3. Manage Stress:

Take time for yourself, put up a “Do Not Disturb” sign, meditate, do deep breathing exercises, experiment with aroma therapy, buy a set of ear plugs, take mini mind vacations, get a massage, live in the moment and ask yourself, “is this going to matter a year from now?”

4. Take Care Of Your Body:

Get a complete physical and have the following checked: Blood pressure, cholesterol, skin and colon cancer screenings, bone density and thyroid screening.

The thyroid gland activity diminishes during menopause which can lead to an overwhelming menopausal experience. Low thyroid can also increase the risk of osteoporosis. (Denice’s note: Have them do a full thyroid panel. It seems like thyroid antibody problems are on the rise and a routine thyroid test does not pick this up.)

I thought Debra had lots of great information to share. I was a bit discouraged that she didn’t point out the hazards of carrying too much weight. It was almost like she didn’t want to address those issues because she didn’t want to hurt people’s feelings. Maybe she just wanted to focus on gathering a positive self-image and higher self-esteem. I don’t know. Debra does have a Master’s in Public Health. She is definitely against dieting in any form and she does make some great points. Debra also wrote a book on why women need chocolate.

Fioricet

Laura Bruno asked:

In her most accessible book yet, Victoria Boutenko brings the benefits of greens to everybody–not just those willing to commit to a 100% raw food lifestyle. The information she shares in Green for Life will improve the diet and nutrient assimlation for the heaviest meat eater, to the occasional vegetarian, to the 100% raw fooder.

Green smoothies make “objectionable” foods like heads of kale, lambquarters, or carrot tops completely palatable. Through the magic of blending fruits like watermelon or bananas with greens, they become tasty liquid treats that help everything from insufficient stomach HCL to arthritis.

I found this book surprisingly engaging. Admittedly, I enjoy eating greens. I’ve even been known to make the occasional kale-raspberry smoothie; however, I had no idea of the science behind these strange cravings. Victoria has collected nutritional profiles of specific greens, results from a scientific study about the effect of green smoothies on stomach acid, favorite recipes and some impressive testimonials from participants in the Roseburg Study.

I found her observations about chimpanzees especially refreshing: they share so much of our DNA that scientists ruthlessly experiment on chimps by giving them all kinds of human diseases. Victoria turns this similarity around and suggests we look to wild chimpanzees for ways to stay or become healthy, rather than inflicting illnesses on them in captivity. Chimpanzees naturally eat far more greens than humans.

Green for Life is filled with practical observations, and it contains Victoria’s characteristic analytical and experimental quest for “what works.” When she finally finds something reliably great, she wants to share it with as many people as possible. Her passion is as infectious as the green smoothies are delicious. Yes, I like greens anyway, but I have personally witnessed non-greens lovers actually enjoying the smoothies I make. These same Standard American Diet people now regularly request large helpings of raw fruits and vegetables. Thank you, Victoria, for such an easy way to make a difference in people’s lives!

Tramadol

Clive Lilwall asked:

Ben Goldacre is an English medical doctor and author of “Bad Science.” He’s beside himself with indignation at what he sees as the unscientific nonsense that passes for science information in the popular press. He’s particularly concerned about what people are led to believe about their health. He observes that the public is obsessed about health issues–half of all science stories in the media are medical. He says we are “bombarded with scary sounding claims and stories.” But, he claims, these stories we get are from reporters who don’t understand scientific evidence.

Take homeopathy, Goldacre’s favourite whipping boy. Samuel Hahnemann devised homeopathy in the late eighteenth century. He decided that if he could find a substance that could induce symptoms of a disease in a healthy individual then it could be used to treat the same symptoms in a sick person. His first homeopathic remedy was cinchona bark, which he suggested was a treatment for malaria. Since giving out chemicals and herbs could be dangerous, Hahnemann decided that the substance should first be diluted.

Today the typical homeopathic dilution is such that the original substance has been diluted so that less than one part per million of the original substance remains. Or far greater than that, according to Goldacre. He maintains that with such dilution homeopathic products cannot possibly produce any medical effects. He rejects the homeopath’s assertions that “water has a memory.” In other words, the active ingredient molecules affect the water and make you feel better. In fact, Goldacre, says, homeopathic products are nothing more than sugar pills that cannot possibly heal anyone.

They may, of course, cause the placebo effect–make the patient to feel better because he has made a self-fulfilling prophecy that taking the pills will make him feel better. And that’s what really annoys Goldacre–hearing about people who claim to be made better by some unscientific treatment when in fact it’s all in their minds. Of course, most people don’t care–they just want to feel better by any available means.

The placebo effect can be truly amazing. Take, for instance, research that shows that four sugar pills are more effective than two in treatment of gastric ulcers. Obviously, the placebo effect is about more than the pill – it is about what Goldacre describes as the “cultural meaning of the pill.” These cultural meanings have an impact on the person’s beliefs about their own health, and the ability of the body to heal itself. Colour is important. Stimulant medications tend to come in red, orange or yellow pills, while antidepressants and tranquillizers are generally blue, green or purple.

Packaging is also important. That’s why people buy brand name painkillers rather than generic brands–the ingredients may be the same, but the mind decides that the brand name painkillers work better, and so they usually do. There is also evidence to show that fake knee arthroscopy works just as well as the real thing in reducing pain. And as can be expected, all the research shows that doctors who have a good beside manner are more effective in helping patients get better. In many ways, healing takes place when conditions are right in the patient’s mind, and the treatment they take is only partly responsible for making those conditions positive.

There are so many people out there who want to help you to become healthy, it’s difficult to know where to start. Walmart wants to sell you vitamin pills, Dr. Ho wants to clean out your colon, and your doctor insists you need to be probed to check out your prostate or take pills to lower your cholesterol, Coffee Time suggests that organic coffee is better for your than normal coffee. The Running Room suggests you spend more time exercising to lose weight, while Herbal Magic claim it can be done by using herbs.

Ben Goldacre seems to suggest you can’t really believe anything unless science has validated it. That means organizing trials in which neither the experimenter nor the patients know whether they get the pills with the active ingredient or the placebo, randomly assigning patients to the placebo or active ingredient group, and using valid statistics to evaluate the data. When it is realized that much of the research in medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine do not always follow these rules, one has to step back and think, “What am I to believe?”

It should be obvious that not everything we do to maintain our health can be validated by science. Many people led healthy lives before the scientific method was even thought of, by simply eating natural foods and behaving sensibly. We can do the same today. That means have a healthy skepticism about what both pill sellers and doctors tell us, including Dr. Ben Goldacre.

The cheapest carisoprodol online
